Refashioning can be fun!

While I do already have some vintage silk sari skirts in different lengths, I saw on Candi's creations (tutorial here)that she made one herself out of cotton fabrics which I would have loved, so following her tutorial I was able to make up a knee length version out of some fabric I scored from the Op shop. The skirt is basically a double layer flared wrap around shirt with very long ties to be able to style it in various ways. The red side layer has a cute pattern of little flowers. As this is the shorter layer you get to see a trim of the black fabric at the bottom.

The black side layer is the longer one and has different patters of small flowers and larger flowers and a red stripe so the colors all go together nicely.

I really like the colors of the skirt and had some difficulty with cutting the waistband straps neat and straight enough. (I will have to buy a rotarty cutter and HUGE mat + ruler next time I get the chance) I just used a rolled hem on my over locker for the edges of the skirt layers with contrasting thread. It is too short to be wrapped as a dress but I may be able to wear it as a shirt with some jeans or pants. It will be a lot nicer to wear in the summer as the silk ones were a bit sticky in the heat. If you were interested in buying yourself a vintage silk sari or am interested in seeing more about them go here.

  1. Hi Toni - A little tip to getting an evenly spaced band: mark and cut a couple of inches in then fold that over so that becomes your width patten. continue cutting and folding until desired length is achieved. And no need for the mat and ruler :) Clear as mud? LOL

  2. Yes clear as mud! lol I did try it that way, but it was reclaimed fabric and already had the seam in place which unfortunately was not even. Also I cut it too big to start with and had to go back by hand :S

  3. Also I would like to try a small amount of patchwork in future and that cutter and mat would make it a lot easier too!
